Fact Check: Claim That Rahul Gandhi Attended Lok Sabha Only To Vote On The Waqf (Amendment) Bill Is Fake; He Was Also Present During The Discussion

New Delhi (Vishvas News): Following the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 after extensive discussion in both houses of Parliament, a video clip of Rahul Gandhi claiming that he was absent during the bill’s discussion in the Lok Sabha but arrived late at night only to cast his vote.
Vishvas News investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha after nearly 12 hours of debate, during which Rahul was present. In the voting that followed, 288 members supported the bill, while 232 voted against it. After its approval in the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha also passed this bill.
What is viral?
Social media user ‘Karan Kumar Swami’ shared the viral video with the caption, “Hindus, open your eyes and see…Rahul Gandhi was not in the House since morning….But now at 10 pm, he has reached the Parliament to vote against the Waqf Bill with the intention of illegally occupying your properties! After all he is Firoz’s grandson.”
Many other users have shared this video with similar claims.
Investigation
On April 2, 2025 Kiren Rijiju introduced the Muslim Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, amending the Muslim Waqf Act, 1923.
According to news reports, the bill underwent over 12 hours of discussion in the Lok Sabha before being passed. A total of 288 members voted in favour, while 232 opposed it.
The complete video of the discussion is available on the official YouTube channel of the Indian Parliament. Rahul was present in the House when Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi from Jorhat, Assam, shared his views on the bill at 1:16 pm.
Later, around 6:00 pm, when KC Venugopal, Congress MP from Alappuzha, Kerala, was speaking on the bill, Rahul was also present in the Lok Sabha.
Several other news reports also confirm Rahul Gandhi’s presence in the House during the discussion on the bill.
However, according to a report by the news agency IANS, while Rahul did not participate in the discussion in Lok Sabha on the Waqf Amendment Bill.
According to the report, “Muslim leaders expressed disappointment over this attitude of Rahul Gandhi while talking to news agency IANS on Thursday (April 3, 2025).”
Meanwhile, Rahul took to his social media handle to criticise the bill, calling the Waqf (Amendment) Bill a ‘weapon’ to marginalise Muslims and strip them of their property rights.
After the Lok Sabha discussion (proceeding time after 12.30 am), Rahul was also present during the voting on the bill. A total of 288 votes were cast in favour, while 232 votes were against it.
To verify the viral claim, we contacted several journalists, including PTI-language journalist Deepak Ranjan, who covered the parliamentary proceedings. He confirmed, “Rahul Gandhi was present in the House during the discussion on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha.”
The viral post refers to Rahul as the grandson of ‘Feroze’, creating confusion about his religious identity. To clarify, Indira Gandhi’s husband was Feroze Gandhi, a Parsi, and his father’s name was Jahangir Fardoon.
The Facebook user who shared the viral video with a misleading claim has over 2000 followers.
