Fact Check: Video Of Shakti Singh Gohil Targeting Modi In Rajya Sabha Is Edited, Lok Sabha Visuals Misused

During the Budget session, while speaking on the motion of thanks to the President’s address, Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, Shakti Singh Gohil, criticised PM Modi for claiming to be ‘poor’. However, edited visuals from PM Modi’s address in the Lok Sabha were spliced to Gohil’s Rajya Sabha address, creating an impression that both Narendra Modi and Amit Shah were present in the Rajya Sabha during his remarks.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video of Congress MP Shakti Singh Gohil speaking in the Rajya Sabha has gone viral on social media. In the video, Gohil, while referring to Mahatma Gandhi, takes a dig at Narendra Modi over his claim of being ‘poor’. The video features Modi and Amit Shah seemingly present during Gohil’s remarks, creating the impression that Gohil is taking a dig at PM Modi in his presence.

Vishvas News investigated the claim and found it to be false. The viral video is edited. In reality, Gohil made these remarks during the recent budget session while speaking in the Rajya Sabha on the motion of thanks to the President’s address. At that time, PM Modi was not present in the Rajya Sabha. The visuals of the Lok Sabha proceedings were spliced into the Rajya Sabha proceedings.

What is viral?

On May 20 2025, Facebook user ‘The News’ shared the video that has since garnered over 10 million views.

Investigation

The viral video is from the Rajya Sabha in the new Parliament building, where Shaktisinh Gohil can be seen speaking. According to information available on the Parliament’s website, Shaktisinh Gohil is a Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat. His term in the Rajya Sabha is from 2020-26.

To trace the original clip, we conducted a keyword search and found the original video of his speech on the official YouTube channel of Sansad TV.

According to the information available here, Shaktisinh Gohil’s address was part of the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address during the Budget Session (2025). On February 4, 2025, he criticised the government on several issues during his speech.

In the final minutes of his 17-minute and 10-second speech, he said, “….Sir (addressing the chair), there should be feelings from the heart…Gandhi Ji was not the son of a poor man. His father had a mansion…he was the highest officer of the Nawab…of Junagadh…Gandhi Ji himself was a barrister and wore suits and boots and could enjoy his life to the fullest. He never said that he was the son of a poor man. But when he saw that his country needed independence, he left his suits and boots and came wearing a dhoti and gave freedom to this country wearing half a dhoti. He was not the son of a poor man.”

He further stated, “Today when someone says that I am the son of a poor man and wears a suit worth ten lakhs (rupees) and serves a big industrialist , then it will not do any good. It is not important where you were born, what is the intention of your mind, it matters to the countrymen…and that is what I definitely expect.”

Following this, he criticised Home Minister Amit Shah over the BJP’s promise during the Jammu and Kashmir election campaign, referring to it as ‘rewdi politics. Contrary to what is shown in the viral video, neither Modi nor Shah was present in the Rajya Sabha.

We reviewed the Rajya Sabha proceedings on Sansad TV from February 3 to February 5, 2025, and found no footage of PM Modi and Shah during that period.

Prime Minister Modi presented a motion of thanks to the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha on February 6, 2025. During his address, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar was presiding over the session.

Our investigation reveals that the viral video clip is edited. The scene where PM Modi is shown standing is not from the Rajya Sabha but from the Lok Sabha.

In fact, this footage is from the Prime Minister’s speech on the motion of thanks to the President’s address in the Lok Sabha during the same budget session. He delivered this speech on February 4, 2025.

We contacted Deepak Ranjan, a journalist with PTI-Bhasha who covers parliamentary proceedings. He confirmed, “Shakti Singh Gohil is a Rajya Sabha MP and the viral video is of Rajya Sabha proceedings.”

The Facebook user who shared the misleading video with the fake claim has five lakh followers.

Conclusion: During the Budget session, while speaking on the motion of thanks to the President’s address, Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, Shakti Singh Gohil, criticised PM Modi for claiming to be ‘poor’. However, edited visuals from PM Modi’s address in the Lok Sabha were spliced to Gohil’s Rajya Sabha address, creating an impression that both Narendra Modi and Amit Shah were present in the Rajya Sabha during his remarks.
