Fact Check: Viral Video Claiming Owaisi Returned ‘I Love Muhammad’ Poster Shared With False Context

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A short video of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi is going viral on social media. In the 9-second video, Owaisi is seen with a group of people holding a poster that reads ‘I Love Muhammad’ and features the Gumbad-e-Khizra (a religious site in Medina). His own photo also appears on the poster, with one person covering it with his hand.
In the video, Owaisi can be heard saying, “Don’t make me a sinner, you keep this yourself.” This video is being shared with the claim that Owaisi refused to accept the ‘I Love Muhammad’ poster to avoid potential controversies.
Vishvas News, in its investigation, found that the viral claim is false. Some people had presented Owaisi with an ‘I Love Muhammad’ poster that included his picture next to the Gumbad-e-Khizra. Owaisi asked for his picture on the frame to be covered with a hand and returned it, saying, “Where is the Gumbad-e-Khizra and where am I? You are making me a sinner.” The context of the video was about respect and propriety, not about avoiding controversy over the ‘I Love Muhammad’ poster. The video is being shared with a false claim.

On October 6, 2025, Facebook user Pramod Sharma shared the viral post, with the caption: “Owaisi refused to take the I Love Muhammad picture, said don’t drag me into this mess #ilovemuhammad.”

Investigation
To verify the context of the viral video, we extracted key frames and conducted a reverse image search using Google Lens. This led us to the complete video of the incident posted on the Instagram handle of Etemaad Daily. In the video uploaded on October 3, 2025, a crowd can be seen presenting Owaisi with the ‘I Love Muhammad’ poster, which he even holds for a photo. However, upon noticing his own picture on the poster, he asks for it to be covered with a hand and then returns the poster, saying, “Where is the Gumbad-e-Khizra and where am I? Put your hand on this (his picture)… This should not be done. Look, you people are making me a sinner.”
Our search also found a related news report on an October 2 report on the TV9 Hindi website. According to the report, “A video of AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi is going viral on social media. In this video, Owaisi is seen refusing to accept a poster with ‘I Love Muhammad’ written on it. Actually, that poster had a picture of the Gumbad-e-Khizra on one side and Owaisi’s picture on the other… The video clearly shows a supporter presenting him with the poster to honour him. After the supporter gives the poster, Owaisi accepts it with a laugh. Just then, his attention goes to his own picture on the poster, placed right next to the Gumbad-e-Khizra. Seeing this, Owaisi first asks for it to be covered. The person giving the poster then covers Owaisi’s picture with his hand. Owaisi then tells his supporter, ‘Where is the Gumbad-e-Khizra and where am I?’ After this, Owaisi tells the supporters to keep the poster to themselves. He returned the poster respectfully.”
According to an NDTV report from October 3, “The ‘I Love Muhammad’ controversy is widely discussed across the country these days. Meanwhile, some people from the Muslim community gave AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi an ‘I Love Muhammad’ picture as a gift. Owaisi first accepted it. But as soon as he saw that his picture was next to the Gumbad-e-Khizra, he became a little upset. He asked for his picture on the photo frame to be covered. A person present there covered his photo with his hand. He said, ‘You keep it,’ and then he left.”
A Hindustan Times report from October 6 stated that “AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said the ‘I Love Muhammad’ slogan is not illegal and no one should have any objection to it.”
To verify the authenticity of this post, we contacted Asaduddin Owaisi and shared the video with him. He explained: “This video is being spread with a false claim. I have stated my position on the ‘I Love Muhammad’ campaign multiple times.”
Lastly, we conducted a social media scan of the Facebook user Pramod Sharma, who shared the fake post and found that the user’s bio identifies him as a journalist based in Noida and has around 1000 followers.
