New Delhi (Vishvas News). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has defeated the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, securing its first victory in the state. In connection to this, a video of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee is going viral, where she can be seen getting unconscious while sitting in a car. The video is being shared with claims that it was taken after the TMC’s defeat in Bengal.
Vishvas News investigated and found the viral claim to be false. The viral video is not recent, but approximately five years old. During the 2021 assembly elections, Mamata was campaigning in Nandigram, where she injured her leg. However, she claimed that she was attacked.
What is going viral?
Facebook user ‘Ranjeet Singh’ shared the viral video on May 4, 2026, with the caption, “Mamta Bano’s condition is bad… He should be referred to Bangladesh for better treatment.”

Investigation
To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we conducted a Google search using several keyframes from the video. This led us to a longer version of the video on the official YouTube channel of The Economic Times, shared on March 10, 2021. According to the information available here, Mamata alleged that some ‘assailants’ attacked her while she was near her car. This incident occurred while she was campaigning in Nandigram. Mamata was then taken from Nandigram to Kolkata for treatment.
We also found a report on the Aaj Tak website related to the claim, published on March 11, 2021. According to the report, “Senior party leader Sukhendu Shekhar Roy stated that Mamata Banerjee was about to leave the Birulia area after offering prayers at a temple when some unknown people pushed her into a car and forcibly closed the door, resulting in injuries to her left leg. However, the BJP and Congress dismissed the claim as a staged attack.”
We found this video shared on NDTV ‘s official YouTube channel on March 10, 2021, with the same information.
We contacted Dainik Jagran’s Kolkata bureau chief, JK Bajpai, for more information, who told us that the viral video is not recent, but about five years old.
What is the context?
It is noteworthy that BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee at the Bhawanipur seat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. During the results, Mamata accused the CRPF of pushing and assaulting her. She also accused the Election Commission (EC) of colluding with the BJP. She claimed that the EC’s collusion led to fraudulent voting in 100 seats, resulting in her party’s defeat.

The BJP won 207 seats in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80, while the Congress and the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) each won two seats. The CPI(M) and the All India Secular Front (AISF) each won one seat. These results can be viewed on the EC’s website.
Finally, we scanned the Facebook account of the user who shared the video with the false claim and found that the user described himself as a resident of Jharkhand in his profile.
