Fact Check: Assam Video Falsely Linked To Bengal Expulsions
The viral video claiming to show people being transported on a bus is false. This video is not from Bengal, but from Assam, when in 2024, a Foreigners Tribunal in Barpeta, Assam, declared 28 people non-citizens. They were subsequently sent to a transit camp. The same old video is now being circulated as being from Bengal.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). For the first time, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the assembly elections in West Bengal and has formed the government in the state. Since then, a video of people crying has gone viral on social media, in which some people can be seen being taken away in a bus, while their relatives cry. This video is being shared with the claim that it is from West Bengal, and the BJP government has begun deporting Bangladeshis living there illegally.
Vishvas News investigated and found the viral claim to be false. This video is not from Bengal, but from Assam. The video dates back to an incident in 2024, when a Foreigners Tribunal in Barpeta, Assam, declared 28 people non-citizens and sent them to a transit camp. The same video is now being circulated as being from Bengal.
What is going viral?
Facebook user ‘Shiva Narayan’ shared the viral video on May 13, 2026, captioning it, “How sad! Opposition voters have begun being sent en masse to the Bangladesh border from Bengal and Assam. How will they ever win now? Really, something very bad is happening with these idiots… feeling sad for Momota didi.”

Investigation
To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we extracted several key frames from the video and performed a Google reverse image search. This led us to the viral video on the official YouTube channel of ‘IndiaTodayNE’, uploaded on September 3, 2024. According to the caption, the Foreigners Tribunal in Barpeta, Assam, ordered that 28 people declared foreigners be sent to the detention camp in Goalpara. These included nine women and 19 men. The group was taken to the detention camp amid heavy security.
According to a report published on the Deccan Chronicle website on September 4, 2024, “Assam police stated that 28 people declared non-citizens by Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) in Barpeta district were sent to a transit camp in Matia, Goalpara district. All of them belonged to the Bengali Muslim community.”
