Fact Check: AI-Generated Image Of Bodies Goes Viral After Pahalgam Terror Attack

New Delhi (Vishvas News). Following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, a disturbing image showing several bodies has been circulating on social media. Some users are sharing this image with the belief that it depicts the actual victims of the recent attack.
Vishvas News investigated the viral image and found it to be AI-created. The picture has been created with the help of the Meta AI tool.
What is going viral
A Facebook user named Rama Swaroop (Archive link) uploaded a reel comprising the viral image and wrote, “The biggest strength of ‘Aantakistan’ isn’t its nuclear bomb, but rather the ‘germ bomb’ growing here. Indian government, try erasing this virus called Pakistan just once; perhaps humanity can be saved….”
Investigation
Vishvas News first analysed the viral picture closely. We noticed that there was a watermark of Meta AI. This clearly suggests that the image has been prepared with the help of Meta AI tool. Despite the watermark, several users have shared the image believing it to be true.
Taking the investigation forward, we searched the picture using the AI-detection tool Sightengine. The tool flagged it as 99% AI-generated.
Another AI-detection tool Wasitai, also confirmed the image was AI-generated.
In the second stage of the investigation, it was found that some parts of the post use actual footage from the Pahalgam terror attack. These original visuals were aired by NDTV on April 23.
Vishvas News AI expert Mohit Sahu. He confirmed that the first picture used in the viral post is AI-generated. It was created with the help of Meta AI.
