Fact Check: Old Photo From 2019 G-7 Summit Shared With Misleading Claim About PM Modi’s Absence From The Main Photo

The viral photo claiming PM Modi was missing from the recent G-7 summit is misleading. The image is from the 2019 G-7 Summit in France, and PM Modi is present in it. India continues to participate in G-7 meetings as a guest country for the last several years.

New Delhi (Vishvas News).  A photo is going viral on social media with the claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not seen at the recent G-7 Summit held in Canada. Users are sharing the image, suggesting India was sidelined at the international event.

Vishvas News investigated and found this claim to be false. The viral picture is not a recent one but is from the 45th G-7 summit in 2019, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present in it.

India isn’t a formal member of the G7, which is a group of the world’s seven largest developed economies. However, recognising India’s emergence as a significant and responsible economic power, the G7 has invited India to participate as a guest member for several years now. India has attended this conference in that capacity this time as well. Prime Minister Modi has been consistently representing India at these meetings since 2019.

What is viral?

Facebook user ‘Krishan Rumi‘ shared the viral photo and wrote, “Many friends are writing that Modiji is not visible in this picture. So friends, Modiji is a senior world leader; everyone respects him. Posing for photos and appearing on TV are things new or less senior leaders do because they need to be noticed. Modiji is already known and respected by everyone, so he’s not fond of photos. You see the same at weddings; responsible elders stay in the back for photos, while children are found jumping in front of the camera.”

Investigation

Using Google lens, we did a reverse image search of the viral photo. We found this image in several reports of 2019. According to a report dated Aug 26, 2019 on the United Nations website, this photo is from the G-7 summit held in France.

This image can be seen in several other reports, which are in reference to the G-7 meeting of 2019.

The G-7 summit was held in Berries, France between August 24-26, 2019.

According to the news report, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Canada on June 16 to attend the latest G-7 summit. Apart from the summit, he had bilateral meetings with the heads of states of many countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shared pictures of attending this meeting and bilateral meetings with other countries from his official X handle.

The official G7 X account also posted pictures of the member countries’ meeting and photo session.

The seven member nations of the G7 are the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. On June 17, 2025, a working session of the group was held, with the heads of these seven countries participating. Canada is this year’s G7 president.

When the Canadian Prime Minister was asked about inviting Narendra Modi to attend this conference, Mark Carney had said that India is the fifth largest economy in the world and it is important for it to attend this meeting.

We also contacted JP Ranjan, Foreign Affairs Journalist at Dainik Jagran. He said, “India has been participating in G-7 summits for a long time. Since 2019, PM Modi has consistently attended these meetings.”

Hudson Institute also reported that India’s consistent inclusion is due to its strategic importance and growing influence on global issues.

Content inspired by a particular ideology has been shared from the profile of the user who shared the viral photo.

Conclusion: The viral photo claiming PM Modi was missing from the recent G-7 summit is misleading. The image is from the 2019 G-7 Summit in France, and PM Modi is present in it. India continues to participate in G-7 meetings as a guest country for the last several years.
