Fact Check: Opposition Leaders Condemned Pahalgam Terror Attack, Viral Claim False

New Delhi (Vishvas News) A claim going viral on social media alleges that opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and Supriya Shrinate did not condemn the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Vishvas News investigated the viral post and found the claim to be fake. The opposition leaders mentioned in the post had condemned the attack and expressed grief. The claim is baseless.
What is going viral?
Facebook user Bhupendra Chauhan posted a collage on April 28, 2025 and claimed, “Those who had a problem with the names written on vegetable and fruit carts are silent on the murders committed on the basis of religion…their sentiments are awakened only when the matter fits their agenda. ” The post is shared with the images of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and Supriya Shrinate.

Investigation
On April 22, 2025, terrorists attacked tourists in the Baisaran area of Pahalgam, killing 26 people, including a Nepali national. A local resident also lost his life in the attack.
After the incident, national and international leaders issued statements and expressed their condolences.
To begin our investigation, we first started looking for the statements from opposition leaders mentioned in the viral post, using keyword search. We began by scanning the social media accounts of the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. We first scanned his X handle.
Gandhi posted an X post on the day of the incident at 6.19 pm. He wrote, “The news of the cowardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which tourists were killed and many others injured, is highly condemnable and heart-wrenching. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and hope for the speedy recovery of the injured. The entire nation stands united against terrorism. Instead of making hollow claims about normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir, the government should now take responsibility and take concrete steps so that such barbaric incidents do not happen again and innocent Indians do not lose their lives in this manner.”
Digging further, we searched for a statement by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi and found it on her X handle. It was posted at 5:23 pm on the day of the attack. It read, “The cowardly terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir is a highly condemnable and shameful act. Targeting unarmed and innocent civilians is a crime against humanity. This is completely unacceptable. The whole country is united against terrorism and strongly condemns it. According to reports, many tourists have been killed in this attack. May God give peace to the departed souls. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
We also searched the X handle of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and found a post from April 22, 2025. It read, “The horrific pictures of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir are heartbreaking. This attack is condemnable from every point of view. The best medical services and facilities of the country should be immediately ensured for the speedy treatment of the injured. Heartfelt wishes for everyone’s health and life. The central government needs to first ensure an environment of security, only then the lives of local residents and tourists can remain safe.”
Shrinate also posted on X on the day of the attack. She wrote, “The barbarity with which the terrorists killed tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, is terrifying. The entire country stands united against this cowardly act – those who dare to raise their eyes against this country should remember that this country has won against terrorism every time. The Modi government has been making hollow claims of the situation being normal in Jammu and Kashmir – but in reality the situation is extremely worrying. Today, there is a need to take strong and decisive steps – the time for bragging is over – a hesitant attitude cannot be adopted on the killing of innocent people.”
Vishvas News also spoke to Nitin Agarwal, National Coordinator of Congress’s social media team. He confirmed that senior opposition leaders had condemned the attack soon after it occurred and called the viral post an attempt to malign them using misinformation.
At the end of the investigation, we scanned the facebook profile of the user who posted the fake post w. User Bhupendra Chauhan is followed by more than five thousand people. The user is a resident of Khandwa.
