Fact Check: Sukhbir Singh Badal’s Old Video Goes Viral With A Misleading Claim

New Delhi (Vishvas News): A video of former Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal discussing farmers is going viral on social media, with some users claiming it is recent.
Vishvas News investigated the video in detail and found that this video dates back to 2016, which is now being shared as recent with misleading claims.
What is in the viral post?
Facebook user ‘Balwinder Singh Virk Virk’ (archive link) shared the viral video with the caption, “Leaders of political parties have no stand. When they are in government, they make different statements. When they are away from power, then their views are different.”
The video caption reads: “The farmers’ union is not made up of farmers, but of Naxalites: Sukhbir Badal.”
Investigation
To verify the viral video, we extracted the keyframes and conducted a Google Lens search. This led us to the official YouTube channel of Punjab Hulchul, where the same video was uploaded on November 19, 2016. The video description reads, “Sukhbir Badal’s controversial statement on Punjab’s Kisan Union”
We found a related report on the official YouTube channel of Jagbani. The video, uploaded on November 19, 2016, states that the viral video is from Sangrur, where Badal attended an event and made this statement regarding the instance of farmer organisations on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) issue. Later, he clarified his words and clarified that his remarks were directed at those attempting to damage Punjab’s water resources, not against those advocating for farmers’ interests. The viral clip appears at the 18-second mark in the video.
We found a video similar to the viral clip on the YouTube channel of Punjab Kesari TV. In the video, uploaded on November 18, 2016, the same individuals seen with Sukhbir Singh Badal in the viral video are present.
Additionally, the viral video was shared by many Facebook users in 2021, as seen in previous posts.
To verify further, we spoke with Baljit Singh Tibba, the District In-charge of Punjabi Jagran, Sangrur. He confirmed that this video is old and that Badal made this statement during an event.
Lastly, we checked the Facebook profile of the user who shared the video and found that the user has around 16000 followers.
