Fact Check: Name Of Woman Caught Smuggling Liquor In Burqa Is Not Rukhsar, Communal Claim Goes Viral

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video circulating widely on social media shows a woman in police custody for trying to smuggle alcohol concealed under a burqa. The video is being shared with the claim that her name is Rukhsar and she was caught smuggling liquor in Bihar.

Vishvas News found in its investigation that the viral claim is false. Police had caught two women – Veena Devi and Nandini Kumari – for smuggling liquor under their burqas. 

What is going viral?

Facebook user ‘Deepak Bora‘ shared the viral video and wrote in the caption, “This is why the burkha should be banned….Rukhsar caught red-handed while smuggling liquor inside burqa”

Investigation

To verify the viral claim, we searched on Google with the help of relevant keywords. We found a report related to the claim on the official website of Navbharat Times published on April 18, 2025.  The report states, “The Katihar Prohibition Department team apprehended two women at Mania Railway Station who were smuggling foreign liquor from Kumedpur, West Bengal, by train. The women had taped the liquor to their bodies. Veena Devi and Nandini Kumari, residents of Pipradhari Tola under Mufassil Police Station, were arrested with 9 liters and 8.1 liters of foreign liquor, respectively.”

A Zee News report also mentions the names of the women as Veena Devi and Nandini Kumari, who were caught smuggling liquor under burqas.

According to the news report related to the claim published in the April 19, 2025 edition of Dainik Jagran, a woman constable intercepted the two women wearing burqas. During the search, English liquor tetra packs were taped to their bodies, under the burqa. The names of the women have been given as Veena Devi and Nandini Kumari.

To verify further, we contacted Amar Pratap, the Katihar editor of Dainik Jagran. He confirmed that the viral claim is false. He stated that the women were apprehended at Mania railway station for smuggling liquor. Initially, one woman provided a false name, Sandhya Devi, but police investigations revealed their actual names to be Veena Devi and Nandini Kumari, both of whom are Hindu.

Finally, we scanned the user’s account. We found that facebook user Dipak Bora is a resident of West Bengal and has 82 followers.  

Conclusion: Vishvas News found in its investigation that the police had caught two women smuggling liquor in burqa in Bihar. The names of the women are Veena Devi and Nandini Kumari.
