New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video showing a violent clash between police and protesters is being widely shared with claims that it shows the ongoing protest to save the Aravalli range in Rajasthan.
Vishvas News, in its investigation, found the viral claim to be misleading. In reality, this video is from Chhattisgarh. It shows a clash during a protest against the expansion of the Amera Coal Mine, where villagers and police collided.
What is in the viral post?
Facebook user nareshrabarii04 shared the viral video on December 25, 2025, with the caption, “They came to cut down the Aravalli. December 25 Rajasthan Bandh, Save Aravalli.”
Investigation
To investigate the viral video, we searched for screenshots of the video using Google Lens. We found the viral video uploaded on the News18 India YouTube channel on December 3, 2025. According to the news report, this incident concerns a protest against the expansion of the Amera coal mine in Chhattisgarh, where villagers threw stones at the police, and the police responded with tear gas and a lathi charge.
We also found a related video uploaded on December 3, 2025, on Argus News’s verified X handle. Here too, it was described as an incident from Chhattisgarh.
For confirmation, we also spoke to Satish Srivastava, a senior journalist with Nai Duniya in Chhattisgarh. He confirmed that the video is from Surguja, where a protest against the expansion of the Amera coal mine turned violent on December 3, 2025.
What is the Aravalli issue?
The Aravalli controversy primarily revolves around its new technical definition and the ‘100-meter rule’. According to reports, “The Supreme Court recently approved the recommendations of a central government committee, which states that only those geographical formations with an elevation of 100 meters or more above the surrounding ground level will be considered ‘Aravalli hills’. The controversy stems from the fact that, according to environmentalists and experts, approximately 90% of the Aravalli range in Rajasthan and Haryana is less than 100 meters high. The fear is that the implementation of this definition will remove legal protection from these lower-lying hills, paving the way for unrestricted mining and construction activities. This situation will not only increase the risk of desertification but could also prove disastrous for the groundwater levels and ecosystem of Delhi-NCR and the entire North-West India.”
This is why large-scale protests are taking place across India to save the Aravalli range. People consider this an attack on the ‘green lungs’ and are demanding that the definition of the hills be based not on their height but on their ecological importance.
