Fact Check: Video Of Rahul Gandhi Picking Flowers From His Father’s Memorial Shared With False And Objectionable Claim

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video of opposition leader and MP Rahul Gandhi is going viral. In the video, he can be seen picking up something from a mausoleum and keeping it in his pocket. Social media users are sharing the video with objectionable remarks, falsely claiming that he picked up a coin from Mahatma Gandhi’s mausoleum and kept it for himself.
Vishvas News investigated the viral claim and found it to be false. The video was filmed when Rahul visited his father Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial on his death anniversary. There, he picked up a flower from the Samadhi and kept it in his pocket as a token of respect. However, some people are misusing the video to spread misleading and inappropriate narrations.
What is going viral
Facebook user Nitin Pal Sanatani (Archive Link) posted a video on May 23, 2025 with the caption, “Though it is an old tradition to put coins during the funeral procession or at the cremation ground, this initiative of picking up coins is heartily welcomed. I picked up the coin offered at Bapu’s Samadhi and put it in my pocket.”
Investigation
Vishvas News used the Google Lens tool to investigate the viral video. Several key frames were extracted and searched using Google Lens. This led us to a report on the YouTube channel of Live Hindustan uploaded on May 21, 2025. A part of the viral video appears in the report, specifically at the 1:30-minute mark. The report explains that Rahul picked up a flower from his father’s samadhi and kept it as a tribute. This emotional moment was captured on camera.
In our investigation, we found the same video on the X handle of Congress’s national media coordinator, Supriya Bhardwaj. The video was accompanied by the caption, “An emotional moment. When my eyes became moist. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi today picked up a flower from the samadhi of his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi ji and kept it in his pocket.”
We also found the viral video on the Uttarakhand Congress X handle posted on May 21, 2025, with the caption, “The flower picked up by Rahul from the Samadhi in memory of Rajiv Gandhi ji said a lot.”
Concluding our investigation, Vishvas News contacted Congress national spokesperson Abhay Dubey. He confirmed that Rahul Gandhi had kept the flowers from Rajiv Gandhi’s Samadhi Veer Bhumi in his pocket. However, people with a narrow mindset are now sharing the video with misleading claims.
Lastly, we investigated the Facebook account of Nitin Pal Sanatani, who shared the fake post, and found that the user has over 5900 followers.
Conclusion: Vishvas News investigated and found that the viral post was fake. Rahul Gandhi had picked flowers from his father’s samadhi, but the video is now being circulated with misleading claims.
