Fact Check: Video Of Submerged Airplane In Jordan Falsely Linked To Indian Navy Discovery

New Delhi (Vishvas News): A picture of an airplane submerged in water is circulating widely on social media, with claims that the Indian Navy has discovered this 114-year-old plane in the sea.
Vishvas News investigated the claim and found that the submerged airplane is a decommissioned Lockheed Martin L1011 TriStar, deliberately sunk in Jordan’s Gulf of Aqaba in 2019. It was submerged to serve as an artificial reef for marine life and attract divers, it was not discovered by the Indian Navy.
What is in the viral video?
Facebook user ‘hariom_kumar_deshi_boy’ posted the video (archive link) On March 20, with the caption, “Indian Navy found 114-year-old plane in the water.”
Investigation:
To verify the viral claim, we conducted a Google reverse image search. This led us to various news reports featuring the same images from the viral video. According to the reports, the submerged airplane is a decommissioned Lockheed Martin L1011 TriStar, deliberately sunk in Jordan’s Gulf of Aqaba in 2019. The aircraft was sunk to attract divers and to serve as an artificial reef for marine life.
Notably, this video had gone viral previously as well. We found it on a page called ‘Bubba Acaba’, and reached out to the user, who confirmed that it was filmed in Jordan.
We conducted a Google search to verify whether the Indian Navy had discovered any sunken plane but found no reports confirming this.
The viral post alleges that the plane is 114 years old. However, our research, revealed that the first flight took place in 1903, and the first passenger flight in 1914. Additionally, the aircraft model shown in the viral video was not introduced until the 1980s. Therefore, the claim that this is a 114-year-old plane is misleading.
We also scanned the Instagram profile of ‘hariom_kumar_deshi_boy’, the user who shared the video with the false claim and found that he has over 600 followers.
