Fact Check: Mayawati’s ‘No BJP Alliance’ Statement is From 2020, Not Recent

Mayawati’s statement about not allying with the BJP dates back to 2020, when she clarified her stance ahead of the by-elections for seven assembly seats in UP.

New Delhi (Vishvas News): Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, who is actively working on strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, has recently been in the spotlight for several key decisions. Amid this, a video clip of her is going viral on social media, with claims that she assured Muslim voters she would rather retire from politics than form an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Vishvas News investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. The statement in the viral video dates back to 2020, when The BSp chief was addressing the allegations of aligning with the BJP before the by-elections for seven assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh (UP). At that time, she stated that she would never ally with the BJP in either the Assembly or Lok Sabha elections.

What is viral?

Social media user ‘Firozahmad Gada‘ shared the viral video clip with the caption, “I want to tell the Muslim community that I can retire from politics, but will never contest elections by joining hands with BJP.”

Investigation

The viral video clip is one minute long, in which Mayawati can be heard saying, “…it cannot be done at any cost and I want to tell this, especially to the people of the Muslim community…that I will retire from politics, but I can never contest elections in alliance with the BJP. And why should I take political retirement under pressure from the BJP…people say…people told me that Behenji should put pressure…I said that I will retire from politics, but I will not contest elections in alliance with them. But I am not going to take any political retirement…I am very strong…very robust and very self-respecting. And I want to tell that no matter how much pressure the SP, BJP, Congress put on me, I am not going to be suppressed and I am not going to retire from politics. And I will fight equally against the casteist forces, capitalist forces, narrow-minded and communal forces on every front…(I will keep).”

Based on this, we conducted a keyword search and found several old reports mentioning this statement. According to an NBT report dated November 2, 2020, “Angry over the ‘conspiracy’ of the Samajwadi Party in the Rajya Sabha elections, Mayawati said that she would not hesitate to support even the BJP to defeat the SP. Then there was a discussion in the political circles that Mayawati is planning an alliance with the BJP in the upcoming elections. However, now the BSP chief has put an end to all these speculations. Mayawati has clearly said that the BSP will never form an alliance with the BJP. A day before the voting on seven assembly seats in UP on Tuesday, Mayawati clarified the allegations of being in alliance with the BJP. Mayawati said that her party is against the ideology of the BJP and will never form an alliance with the BJP in the future assembly or Lok Sabha elections.”

This is also mentioned in a report dated November 2, 2020, available on the Hindi News18.com website.

According to a report by indiatimes.com, “Mayawati said that she had not talked about alliance with BJP, but had talked about voting for BJP to defeat SP. She said that SP and Congress are spreading such false rumours so that BSP does not get Muslim votes in the by-elections.”

On ABP Live’s official YouTube channel, we found the original video of BSP chief’s press conference, uploaded on November 2, 2020.

According to the video report, Mayawati stated, “People of Congress and SP are propagating my statement in a wrong way so that people, especially from the Muslim community, get separated from BSP and Muslims do not vote for BSP in the by-elections being held on 7 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh.”

Our investigation confirms that Mayawati’s statement dates back to 2020 and is not recent. To verify this, we contacted senior journalist Siddharth Kalhans from Lucknow, who confirmed, “Mayawati had given this statement before the 2020 by-elections.”

The Facebook user who shared the viral video with the misleading claim has over 6000 followers.

Conclusion: Mayawati’s statement about not allying with the BJP dates back to 2020, when she clarified her stance ahead of the by-elections for seven assembly seats in UP.
