Fact Check: Claim Of UPI Being Shut Down From April 1, 2025 Is FAKE, New Guidelines Address Blocked Mobile Numbers

New Delhi (Vishvas News). Following the new guidelines issued by the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) regarding UPI (Unified Payments Interface) transactions, a claim is going viral on social media that all banks will stop UPI services from April 1, 2025, marking the beginning of the next financial year. According to the viral claim, consumers will no longer be able to access UPI services after this date.
However, Vishvas News found this claim to be false in its investigation. There will be no disruption in UPI transactions from April 1, 2025, and consumers can continue using this service as before. However, to enhance consumers’ safety, NPCI has issued new guidelines requiring banks to regularly delete mobile numbers that have been deactivated or reassigned to new users. This measure aims to prevent security risks and ensure smooth UPI transactions.
What is viral?
Social media user ‘Saurav Kumar‘ shared the viral post with the caption, “All banks are going to shut down UPI effective April 1, 2025.”
Several other users have shared it with similar claims.
Investigation
On February 25, transactions exceeding ₹21 lakh crore, highlighting its importance and prevalence. NPCI operates UPI, and according to the data of February 2025, a total of 652 banks live on this interface, offering its benefits to customers.
In such a situation, any decision to shut down this service would be major news. However, we did not find any credible information regarding the closure of UPI from the beginning of the new financial year.
Additionally, there is no mention of any such move on the official website of NPCI.
However, our investigation led us to many reports mentioning new guidelines issued by NPCI to banks. According to news reports, “NPCI has issued new guidelines for the security of UPI transactions, which will come into effect from April 1, 2025. Under these rules, banks will have to regularly delete mobile numbers that have been closed or reassigned to new users.”
This circular is available on the NPCI website, according to which, this guideline has been asked to be implemented by March 31, 2025.
Starting April 1, 2025, all banks will be required to submit monthly reports to NPCI. These reports will include details, such as total UPI IDs, active users, total monthly transactions, and other relevant information.
According to NPCI data, in February 2025, 652 banks were using UPI service, facilitating transactions worth ₹22 lakh crore during this month.
UPI initially started with a pilot launch with 21 member banks under NPCI, on April 11, 2016, in Mumbai by the then RBI Governor Dr It was established under the leadership of Raghuram Ji Rajan and today it has become an important system for interbank transactions.
We contacted Business Standard’s Deputy News Editor, Neelkamal Sundaram, who confirmed that the UPI service will continue as usual. He emphasised that NPCI has introduced these guidelines to improve the efficiency and safety of UPI.
We also contacted the corporate communications team of many other banks including SBI, and they confirmed that the claim of shutting down UPI is false.
The user who shared the viral claim identifies himself as a resident of Patna in his profile and is highly active on social media.
