Fact Check: Claim Of Stone Pelting During Ram Navami Procession In Kanpur Is False

 New Delhi (Vishvas News): A claim is going viral on social media regarding the Ram Navami procession, with some users sharing a video alleging that stones were thrown at the Ram Navami procession on Meston Road in Kanpur. The video also shows the scenes of chaos during the procession.

 Vishvas News investigated the claim and found it to be misleading. In reality, some individuals had spread the rumor about stone pelting during the procession. Later, the police also registered a case in this regard.

 Facebook user Keshav Singh posted the video on April 8 2025 (archive link) with the caption, “Stones were thrown at the Ram Navami procession on Meston Road in Kanpur. Stones were thrown from houses when Jai Shri Ram slogans were raised while passing through a Muslim-dominated area.”

 Investigation

To investigate the viral claim, we first checked the X handle of Kanpur Police. On April 6, the account shared a statement by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) East Shravan Kumar Singh. In this, he dismissed the claim of stone pelting during the Ram Navami procession on Meston Road as a rumour after a preliminary investigation. He clarified that no such incident was found on record, and no related video has surfaced. However, he added that if any concrete evidence emerges, appropriate action will be taken.

On April 8, a video statement of Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Law and Order Harish Chander was posted from the X handle of Kanpur Police. In this, he stated that some alleged YouTubers and anti-social elements had spread rumors of stone pelting during the Ram Navami procession on Meston Road. He confirmed that a case has been registered against unknown people in this matter. The police also issued a warning, stating that strict action would be taken against anyone found sharing such misleading posts.

According to a news published in the Dainik Jagran Kanpur edition on April 7, “There was chaos due to the rumour of stones being thrown during the Ramnavami procession. The police have started looking for those who spread the rumours. Additional Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Harish Chandra said that people were angry when the DJ was not allowed. Due to this, people spread the rumour of stone pelting.”

 According to the news published on Aaj Tak’s website on April 8, “Kanpur Police has registered a case against 200 people of Hindu organizations for creating ruckus and spreading rumors.”

Gaurav Dixit, crime reporter at Dainik Jagran in Kanpur, confirmed that the claim of stone pelting on Meston Road was just a rumour. The police have registered a case against unknown people in this matter.

We also scanned the profile of the user who shared the video with the false claim and found that the user resides in Patna and is influenced by a specific ideology.

Conclusion: Kanpur police dismissed the claim of stone pelting during the Ram Navami procession on Meston Road as a rumor after a preliminary investigation and registered a case against those responsible for spreading the misinformation.
