New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video of Bollywood actress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Mandi Lok Sabha constituency, Himachal Pradesh, Kangana Ranaut, is going viral on social media. In the video, she can be heard in the video describing India as a ‘famished and impoverished’ land.” The video is being shared with the claim that she made derogatory remarks against India, calling it a poor country.
Vishvas News investigated and found the viral claim to be edited and misleading. In the original video, she was talking about the film ‘Dhurandhar 2’ and saying that earlier films portrayed India inaccurately as hungry and naked, and now, films are portraying a new India.
What is going viral?
Facebook user (Archive Link) ‘Sushil Patel’ shared the viral video on March 30, 2026, with the caption, “India is nothing but a famished and impoverished land. — BJP MP Kangana Ranaut”
Investigation
To verify the viral claim, we carefully examined the video and noticed that it features the ANI’s logo. We investigated ANI’s official X account and found the full video uploaded on March 25, 2026. According to available information, the video is from the International Film Festival 2026, Delhi. At the 1-minute 42-second mark of the video, when the reporter asks about the film Dhurandhar-2, Kangana Ranaut responds, saying: ‘Look, this… this platform today is exactly for the kind of films that move past the image of India as a starved and destitute place. This represents the image of a New India. To the extent that people have misled others and tarnished India’s image—now, you should watch films like Dhurandhar-2; watch films on patriotism and see the face of New India. Experience the pulsating energy of a New India that combines values, patriotism, modernity, and the dream of a Developed India. There should be platforms for this. We are very grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who gave us this vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India), and we are all moving forward with it.'”
During our investigation, we also found a news report on Money Control’s official website that supports the claim, published on March 26, 2026. According to the report, “Kangana Ranaut praised the film ‘Dhurandhar 2’, saying that such films showcase a new India and are improving India’s image.”
For more information, we contacted Parag Chhapekar, a senior entertainment journalist in Mumbai, who confirmed that the viral video of Kangana is edited.
What is the context?
‘Dhurandhar 1’ and ‘Dhurandhar 2’ narrate the story of an Indian spy who carries out various secret operations while living in Pakistan. As of March 27, 2026, 8.08 lakh tickets for ‘Dhurandhar 2’ have been sold. ‘Dhurandhar 2’ has earned ₹250 cr in the first six days in foreign countries.
Lastly, we scanned the Facebook account of the user who shared the video with the false claim and found that the user describes himself as a resident of Uttar Pradesh and has 22,000 followers.
Conclusion: Vishvas News investigated and found that the video of Kangana Ranaut describing India as a country of the poor is doctored.
