Fact Check: Viral Video Of Lathicharge In Bangladesh Is Being Attributed To Bengal Election

New Delhi (Vishvas News). Voting for the 2026 Assembly elections has been completed in Assam, Kerala (Keralaam), and Puducherry, and the results are awaited, while voting for the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal is yet to take place. Amidst this election atmosphere, a video of a lathi charge is rapidly going viral and is being shared, linking it to West Bengal. It is claimed that workers of the West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee’s party were trying to spoil the atmosphere. After this, the army lathi charged them.

Vishvas News investigated and found the viral claim to be false. In fact, the viral video is from a demonstration in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in February 2026, and has no connection to India. It is now being shared with the false claim that it is from West Bengal.

What is going viral?

Facebook user ‘Vikee Dhabhai’ shared the viral video on April 9, 2026, with the caption, “Brave army soldiers treating Mamata Behenji’s goons.”

Investigation

To verify the viral claim, we extracted several key frames from the video and performed a Google reverse image search. We found the viral video shared on the Bangladeshi Facebook page ‘Chdnews24’ on February 6, 2026. According to available information, the video is from a protest in Bangladesh.

Many other pages have also shared this video with the same information.

Based on the information we received, we searched Google using relevant keywords. This led us to a report on the protest on the Bangladeshi news website Jugantor, published on February 7, 2026. According to the report, this video shows a clash between Inquilab Manch activists and the police.

A report published on the Dhaka Tribune website states that the protest was organised by activists of the Inquilab Manch. They were demanding justice for the murder of their spokesperson, Sharif Usman Hadi, who was assassinated in 2025. Since then, Inquilab Manch activists have been protesting and demanding justice.

News agency ANI also shared the video of this demonstration on its official account on February 6, 2026.

For more information, we spoke to Dainik Jagran’s Kolkata bureau chief, JK Bajpai. He told us that the video is not from Kolkata and that no such incident occurred there.

What is the context?

It is noteworthy that the Election Commission had announced the assembly elections for four states of the country: Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry. On March 15, 2026, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced the dates at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Voting took place in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry in a single phase on April 9. According to official data released by the Election Commission, 85.38% voting was recorded in Assam, 89.83%t in Puducherry and 78.03% in Kerala.

Tamil Nadu will vote in a single phase on April 23, 2026, while West Bengal will vote in two phases on April 23 and 29, 2026. The results will be announced on May 4, 2026.

In February 2026, the Government of India approved the proposal to officially change the name of the state of Kerala to ‘Keralam’.

Lastly, we scanned the Facebook account of the user who shared the video with the false claim and found that the user has 12,000 followers.

Conclusion: Vishvas News investigated and found that the viral video claiming to show a lathi charge in West Bengal is false. In fact, the viral video has no connection to India. The video is from a demonstration in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in February 2026, and is now being shared with the false claim that it is from Bengal.
