Fact Check: Rahul Gandhi Did Not Campaign For AIADMK In Tamil Nadu, Viral Video Is Misleading

New Delhi (Vishvas News). Ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, a video of Congress MP and Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is going viral. In it, he can be heard praising the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Some users are circulating the video, claiming that while campaigning, Rahul praised the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ally, the AIADMK, instead of his own ally, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
Vishvas News investigated the viral post and found it to be fake. A portion of Rahul’s speech was edited and made viral with malicious intent. Rahul delivered a speech targeting the AIADMK and the BJP, but the viral video trimmed the beginning and conclusion of Rahul’s statement, changing its narrative.
What is going viral?
On April 21, 2026, Facebook user ‘Jitendra Singh’ posted a viral video of Rahul using offensive language with the caption, “The DMK had forbidden Rahul Gandhi from campaigning in Tamil Nadu because the AIADMK was in alliance with the BJP, and that Rahul Gandhi was campaigning by praising the party.”
In the viral video, Rahul can be heard saying in English, “AIADMK played a historic role in Tamilnadu, and there were leaders in AIADMK who truly represented Tamilnadu.”

investigation
To begin with, Vishvas News first extracted several key frames from the viral video and searched them using the Google Lens tool. We found a news item on the Economic Times website, dated April 20, 2026, stating that Rahul addressed an election rally in Tamil Nadu. We also found the part of the news report which is present in the viral video. It was written in English, quoting Rahul, “The AIADMK played a historic role in Tamil Nadu’s progress and had leaders who truly represented its people. Today, it is a hollow shell, reduced to an instrument of the BJP. Its leadership has surrendered due to corruption.”
The initial and concluding parts of the viral video were removed, and a false statement by Rahul was shared to spread lies.
During our investigation, we found Rahul’s full statement uploaded on his YouTube channel on April 20, 2026. It was a video of a public rally in Kanyakumari. Upon reviewing the full video, we found the viral segment at the 16:25 mark, where Rahul can be heard saying that the BJP controls the state power and runs the government from Delhi. The BJP cannot directly address this issue to the people of Tamil Nadu, so it has taken over a political party here. The AIADMK played a historic role in Tamil Nadu’s progress and had leaders who truly represented the people. Today, it has become hollow and a puppet in the BJP’s hands. Its leadership has surrendered due to corruption.
To verify further, we contacted Congress National Spokesperson Akhilesh Pratap Singh, who confirmed that the viral video has been edited. At a rally in Tamil Nadu, Rahul targeted the AIADMK and the BJP.
What is the context?
It is worth noting that on March 15, 2026, assembly elections were announced in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. After which, voting was held in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry in one phase on April 9, 2026. According to the official data released by the Election Commission (EC), 85.38% voting was recorded in Assam, 89.83%t in Puducherry, and 78.03% in Kerala. On April 23, 2026, voting took place for 152 seats in 16 districts in Bengal in the first phase and for a total of 234 seats in Tamil Nadu.
Lastly, we analysed the Facebook profile of the user ‘Jitendra Singh’, and found the user identifies as a resident of Gorakhpur and currently resides in Ahmedabad. This account was created in 2018 and has 91000 followers.
Conclusion: Vishvas News investigated and found the viral post to be fake. The viral video is incomplete. Rahul Gandhi delivered a speech targeting the AIADMK and the BJP, but the viral video cropped its initial and concluding portions, changing its narrative.
