Fact Check: Jamia Millia Islamia ‘Ramadan Nikah’ Notice is Fake

Vishvas News (New Delhi): A purported notification issued in the name of the Registrar of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University is rapidly going viral on social media. This viral letter claims that standing together as a couple (boy and girl) is strictly prohibited on campus during the month of Ramadan. It further alleges that if any couple is found together, the university administration will arrange their ‘Nikkah’ immediately.

Vishvas News’ investigation has found this claim to be completely false. Jamia Millia Islamia has not issued any such notice.

What’s in the Viral Post?

A Tipline user shared the viral notification with us, asking for its authenticity. It contains a document resembling the letterhead of Jamia Millia Islamia. It states that to maintain the dignity of the holy month of Ramadan, standing together is prohibited for boys and girls, and if caught, their marriage will be solemnised immediately.

Investigation

To determine the veracity of the claim, we first analysed the viral document. Upon closer inspection, we noticed several discrepancies in the document. For example, there is a clear difference in the notice’s header and body font. The main message’s font is different and blurred compared to the upper text, indicating editing. Furthermore, language like ‘arranging the marriage’ or ‘bearing the expenses of the Waleema’ should not be used in any official notification of a prestigious university.

We also checked the official website of Jamia Millia Islamia. There was no such circular. The last notification issued on February 20, 2026, was regarding “Extension of the last date for application for B.Ed. and MBA (Distance Mode) Program Batch 2025-26 January.”

Following this, we contacted the university’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Dr Saima Saeed. She termed the viral notice as completely fake and clarified that no such order had been issued by the university. She further stated that the false information was so trivial and baseless that the institution did not even consider it necessary to issue an official clarification.

However, considering the seriousness of the matter and the institution’s image, the Registrar’s Office of Jamia Millia Islamia issued an official circular (Circular No. Gen-04/JMI/RO/E-T/2026) on February 24, 2026. In this circular, the university clarified that:

1. The notice circulating on social media regarding Nikah is completely fake.

2. The university administration has filed a complaint with the Delhi Police Cyber ​​Cell regarding this misleading information.

3. Students and the public are requested to ignore such fake news.

During the investigation, it also emerged that similar misleading content was being circulated in the name of Bahria University, Islamabad, Pakistan. On February 23, 2026 the official Facebook page of ‘Islamabad Today‘ (Archive) shared a post presenting it as an official university notification. However, on February 24, 2026, the same page issued a clarification, debunking the claim as fake. Vishvas News does not independently verify this notification in the context of Bahria University.

An analysis of both notifications reveals that the highlighted text from the Bahria University post appears to have been cut and pasted onto the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) letterhead. The phrasing, subject matter, and the specific note regarding “Walima” are identical in both documents, clearly indicating digital manipulation. This striking similarity can be observed in the collage provided below.

Conclusion: Vishvas News’ investigation revealed that the viral claim is false. Jamia Millia Islamia has not issued any bizarre order to arrange marriages for students found together.
