Fact Check: Viral Video Claiming Infiltrators Are Leaving Bengal After The Elections Is Old And Linked To A Religious Event
The viral video claiming that illegal immigrants are fleeing the state after the West Bengal election results is from an Ijtema held in Hooghly in January 2026, an annual Islamic religious event.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). The results of the assembly elections held in four states and one Union Territory (UT), including West Bengal, have been declared. Defeating the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to form the government for the first time, securing 207 seats in the 293-seat Bengal Assembly. In this context, social media users are sharing a video claiming that with the change of government, several illegal immigrants have started leaving the state and going to Bangladesh. In the video being shared with this claim, a large number of Muslims can be seen leaving.
Vishvas News investigated and found this claim to be fake. The viral video is not related to the Bengal election results. It is from an Ijtema (religious gathering of Muslims) held in Hooghly, West Bengal, this year between January 2-5, 2026.
What is viral?
Social media user ‘Rashtriya Sanatani HiNdU’ shared the viral video on May 5, 2026, writing, “The video is from West Bengal… Bangladeshi infiltrators have started leaving… thousands of people wearing net caps.”They have left for other parts of the country after picking up the junk.This is the time to be cautious. If you see these beasts in your village, city or town, inform the police immediately.”
Several other users across different social media platforms have shared this video with similar claims.
Investigation
To verify the authenticity of the viral video and the claim, we carefully examined it. The young man recording the video can be heard claiming it was from Hooghly. He also mentions an ‘Ijtema’ at one point, which contradicts the claim made alongside the video. Ijtema is a religious gathering of Muslims.
A news search revealed several reports mentioning incidents of violence in Bengal following the results. However, we found no credible news reports mentioning the exodus of Muslims from West Bengal. To find the source of the viral video, we extracted key frames and conducted a reverse image search.
During our investigation, we found this video on the Instagram account of YouTuber Deep Ghosh, shared on January 5, 2026. According to the information provided there, this video is of an Ijtema held in Hooghly district and shows a crowd of people attending it.
It is noteworthy that this video was shared on January 5, while the Bengal Assembly election results were announced on May 4, 2026. This means that the claim made alongside the original video is true.
A news search led us to another video shared by the Instagram handle ‘shibasishsaha.official.’ According to the information accompanying the video, “The bishwa ijtema was held between January 2-5 in the Hooghly district of West Bengal.
According to the information provided here, this event in West Bengal is part of the annual Islamic gathering called ‘bishwa ijtema’, usually held in Bangladesh.
A news search led us to a report by The Statesman, which mentioned the Ijtema being held in Hooghly. The report states, “This year, the Biswa Ijtema is being held at Puinan in Dadpur, Hooghly district, West Bengal. The last Biswa Ijtema in the region was held in 1992 in the Howrah-Nibra area. After a gap of 33 years, this massive religious gathering is being held in the Hooghly district.”
To verify further, we contacted TV journalist Amrit Tiwari, who is covering the Bengal elections, and he confirmed that there are no reports of such migration in Bengal.
The X user who shared the viral video has around one lakh followers.
What is the context?
On March 15, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the dates for elections in four states and one union territory, including West Bengal (April 23 and 29), Tamil Nadu (April 23), Kerala (April 9), Assam (April 9) and Puducherry (April 9), with results to be declared on May 4, 2026.
According to the results, the BJP secured 207 seats in the 293-seat West Bengal Assembly, well above the magic number required to form a government. The Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats.
