Fact Check: Viral Video Falsely Shows TMC Workers Committing Violence
Claim linking a viral video of people engaging in violence to the West Bengal Assembly elections is false. The viral video belongs to an incident in Bangladesh and is not related to India. It is being shared with a misleading claim attributing it to India.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). West Bengal Assembly elections will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29, 2026, with the results declared on May 4, 2026. A large number of paramilitary forces have been deployed in the state for this election. A video related to this is going viral, featuring two people trying to enter a house before army personnel arrive, and they surrender. This video is being shared with the claim that it is from West Bengal, where Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers were trying to intimidate people when CRPF personnel arrived there.
Vishvas News investigated and found the viral claim to be false. This video depicts an incident that occurred in Bangladesh about two years ago, which is now being shared with the false claim that it occurred in West Bengal, and has no connection to India. This video previously went viral with different claims. Vishvas News investigated and exposed the truth at that time as well.
What is going viral?
Facebook user Devashish Ajitkumar Bhattacharya shared the viral video on April 20, 2026, with the caption, “TMC goons came to threaten, but forgot that the CRPF is now deployed in Bengal. They took care of it.”

Investigation
This video also went viral on social media in 2024, with a different claim. Vishvas News investigated the matter at the time. The full report can be accessed here.
At that time, we extracted key frames from the viral video and searched them using Google reverse image search, and found the video uploaded to the official YouTube channel of the Bangladeshi news portal, Dhaka Post, on August 17, 2024. According to available information, the video features an incident that occurred in Bangladesh.
During our investigation, we found a report related to the claim, published on the website ’24 Hours Khobor’ on August 17, 2024. According to the report, the video is from Faridpur, Bangladesh, where a clash broke out between two groups. Following this, the army arrested two people, Tutul Hussain and Dukhu Miyan, who were sent to jail by the court after their arrest.
At that time, we contacted Bangladeshi fact-checker Tausif Akbar regarding the viral video, who confirmed that it is from Bangladesh and the soldiers seen in the video are Bangladesh Army soldiers.
What is the context?
It is noteworthy that the Election Commission announced assembly elections for four states: Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar announced these dates on March 15, 2026, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Voting in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry took place in a single phase on April 9, 2026. According to official figures released by the Election Commission, voter turnout was recorded at 85.38% in Assam, 89.83% in Puducherry, and 78.03% in Kerala.
Tamil Nadu will vote in a single phase on April 23, 2026, while West Bengal will vote in two phases on April 23 and 29, 2026. The results will be declared on May 4, 2026.
Lastly, we scanned the Facebook account of the user who shared the video with the false claim and found that the user has over 6000 followers and shares posts related to a specific ideology.
Conclusion: Vishvas News investigated and found that the claim linking a viral video of people engaging in violence to the West Bengal Assembly elections is false. The viral video belongs to an incident in Bangladesh and is not related to India. It is being shared with a misleading claim attributing it to India.
