Fact Check: Viral Flood Video Predates Indus Water Treaty Suspension

New Delhi (Vishvas News): Following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian government has taken stringent measures, including the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty. Amidst this development, a video showing floodwaters gushing onto a road has gone viral on social media. It is being shared with the claim that the video reflects the aftermath of India’s suspension of the treaty, suggesting that India is alternately blocking and releasing water to Pakistan.

Vishvas News found in its investigation that this video has been present on the internet since April 16, 2025, whereas the decision of the central government to suspend the Indus Water Treaty was taken after the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, 2025.

What is going viral?

Instagram user veer_sharma_creator shared the viral video on April 28, 2025, with the caption, “Kabhi paani rok rahe, kabhi paani se dooba rahe ho, MODI rahm karo(Sometimes you are stopping the water, sometimes you are drowning us with water, Modi have mercy)”

Investigation

To verify the viral claim, we first ran a Google reverse image search on the keyframes of the video. We found the oldest clip uploaded on a Facebook page named ‘Afghanistan Weather Info’ on April 16, 2025. Here, it was described as footage of heavy rainfall in Pakistan.

The video was also posted by Instagram user @hadinaveed2030 on April 17, 2025, without specifying any location.

On April 22, 2025, the video was also shared on Instagram with the claim that it was from Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir.

On searching with keywords, we found that the cloudburst incident took place in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 20, 2025, while the viral video has been present on the Internet since April 16, 2025.

On searching with keywords, we found several reports about heavy rains in Pakistan on April 16, 2025.

According to a Hindustan Times report dated April 16, 2025, ” A heavy hailstorm pummelled Pakistan’s capital Islamabad and parts of its Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Wednesday, leaving a trail of destruction, including widespread damage to vehicles, windscreens, solar panels and trees. The storm was sudden and was accompanied by strong winds that lasted for around 35 minutes. The downpour also triggered flash flooding in some low-lying parts of the capital and rescue teams were rushed to different parts of the city.”

To confirm this, we contacted Muhammad Kamran, assignment editor at Pakistan’s news channel 24 News HD Karachi. He confirmed that heavy rain and hailstorm occurred in Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, after which flash flood-like conditions were seen at many places. However, he did not confirm that the viral video is from Pakistan.

Although Vishvas News does not confirm the location of the viral video, it is certain that the video has been present on the Internet since April 16, 2025, while the decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty by the Indian government was taken after the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, 2025.

Instagram user veer_sharma_creator, who shared the viral video with a false claim, is followed by more than 150000 users.

Conclusion: Vishvas News found in its investigation that the viral claim is fake. This video has been present on the internet since April 16, 2025, while the central government decided to suspend the Indus Water Treaty after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025.
