Fact Check: Claim Of Imran Khan’s Death In Jail Is Fake; Viral Statement Attributed To Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry Is Fabricated
The claim that former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, convicted in a corruption case, has died in jail is fake. The statement of Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, going viral with this claim, is also fabricated.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). Amid tension between India and Pakistan following India’s targeted action against terrorist bases in Pakistan under ‘Operation Sindoor’, social media users have begun questioning the role of the Pakistani army. Meanwhile, a viral claim has surfaced alleging that Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently imprisoned, has died in custody. Accompanying this claim, a press release from Pakistan’s Ministry of External Affairs is going viral, which notably lacks a date and asserts Khan’s death.
Vishvas News investigated the claim and found it to be fake. The Foreign Ministry’s press release is also fake, and there is no truth to the reports of Khan’s death in a Pakistani jail.
What is viral?
Social media user ‘News Thikana‘ shared the viral post with the caption, “News of Imran Khan’s death causes uproar in Pakistan! Read more in the comments section.”
Several users across different social media platforms have also shared this post with identical claims.
Investigation
A thorough news search revealed no credible reports from either Indian or Pakistani media confirming Khan’s death.
According to a May 12, 2025, report by Pakistani news website Dawn.com, Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), held a rally demanding his release.
We then checked the official X profile of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan. The latest official release from this handle is numbered 137 (137/2025), while the release in the viral post is 427/2025, clearly indicating that the post is fabricated.
The official X handle of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of Pakistan has also refuted the viral statement and the claims associated with it.
However, since the handle has been withheld in India, it is not accessible to general users in the country. We accessed the post using the Express VPN tool, and a screenshot of the post can be seen here.
We also contacted Pakistani journalist Lubna Jarar Naqvi regarding the viral claim. She confirmed that the claim of Imran Khan’s death in custody is fake, adding, “A few days ago, Imran Khan’s lawyer confirmed this after meeting him in jail.”
It is noteworthy that Imran Khan is currently serving a 14-year prison sentence in a corruption case.
The Facebook user who shared the viral post with a misleading claim has around eight lakh followers.
