New Delhi (Vishvas News): Amid Pakistan’s deteriorating economic conditions, a video is going viral on social media showing people demolishing a mosque. It is being claimed that due to the economic crisis, Pakistanis are demolishing the mosques and selling bricks and iron to earn their livelihood.
Vishvas News, in its investigation, found this claim to be misleading. The viral video is from Pakistan, but it is not related to the economic crisis. The mosque in the viral video belongs to the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, which has faced repeated attacks on its religious sites in Pakistan due to its non-Muslim identity.
What is viral?
Social media user ‘Acharya Vivek Varun‘ shared the viral video with the caption, “People in Pakistan have demolished a mosque and are selling its iron and bricks for food. This is the third mosque to be demolished recently. They are saying, “If Allah cannot provide us food then what is the need for mosques?”
A community that once destroyed temples, claiming that only Allah is great, is now demolishing Allah’s own places of worship. According to the law of karma, the sins you commit must be paid for in the same way they were committed. Everyone has now understood the meaning of Vedic religion.”
Several other social media users have shared this video with similar claims across different social media platforms.
Investigation
This video has previously gone viral on social media in a similar context during Pakistan’s economic crisis. However, our investigation found the claim to be false. You can read the fact-check report here.
During our investigation, we found a report published on the Indian Express website on February 4, 2023, that mentions this incident.
According to the report, “In a video going viral on social media, some people can be seen demolishing the mosque of Ahmadiya Muslims in Sadar, Karachi. Even before this attack, many religious places of Ahmadiya Muslims have been attacked in Pakistan.”
News agency ANI also tweeted this news from its official Twitter handle on February 3, 2023.
According to the Indian Express report, “Religious places of Ahmadiya Muslims are often targeted in Pakistan because they are seen as non-Muslims and the law of Pakistan also views them in the same way.”
Other reports also confirm this claim. A December 16, 2016, report by The Indian Express, quoting news agency PTI, stated that cases were filed against 3000 people in Pakistan for attacking an Ahmadiyya Muslims’ mosque.
We contacted Pakistan-based journalist and fact-checker Lubna Jarar Naqvi regarding this video. She confirmed that the mosque’s demolition is unrelated to Pakistan’s economic crisis.
The Facebook user who shared the viral video with the misleading claim has around 2000 followers.
