Fact Check: Old Video Of Ahmadiyya Mosque Demolition From Pakistan, Shared With False Claim

New Delhi (Vishvas News). Amid the economic crisis in Pakistan, some social media users have shared a video showing people demolishing a mosque. The video is being circulated with the claim that due to the situation, desperate citizens are demolishing mosques to extract bricks and iron from these buildings, for sale.
Vishvas News investigations reveal the claim is false. The viral video is from Pakistan, but it has nothing to do with the current economic situation. The mosque seen in the viral video is a mosque of the Ahmadiyya sect. According to news reports, the religious places of the community have been repeatedly targeted in Pakistan’s sectarian violence.
What is going viral?
Social media user ‘Acharya Vivek Varun'(archived version) shared the viral video with the caption, “People in Pakistan have demolished a mosque and are selling its iron and bricks for food. This is the third mosque to be demolished recently. They are saying, ‘If Allah cannot provide us food then what is the need for mosques?’
A community that once destroyed temples, claiming that only Allah is great, is now demolishing Allah’s own places of worship. According to the law of karma, the sins you commit must be paid for in the same way they were committed. Everyone has now understood the meaning of Vedic religion.”
Several other social media users have shared this video in the same context on different platforms.
Investigation
This video has gone viral on social media earlier too with similar claims. In our investigation, we found the claim made with this video to be false, the related fact-check report can be read here.
In our search, we found a report published on the website of The Indian Express on February 4, 2023, related to the incident.
According to the report: “In a video going viral on social media, some people can be seen demolishing the mosque of Ahmadiyya Muslims in Sadar, Karachi. Even before this attack, many religious places of Ahmadiyya Muslims have been attacked in Pakistan.”
News agency ANI had also tweeted about the incident from its official Twitter handle on February 3, 2023.
According to the Indian Express report, religious places of Ahmadiyya Muslims are often targeted in Pakistan because they are seen as non-Muslims and the law in Pakistan also views them the same way.
Other reports also confirm this claim. An Indian Express report of December 16, 2016, quoting news agency PTI, also reported that cases have been filed against 3,000 people in Pakistan for attacking an Ahmadiyya mosque. The Business Standard too carried the report.
We had contacted Pakistan-based journalist and fact checker Lubna Jarar Naqvi regarding the video, in 2023. She confirmed that the demolition had nothing to do with Pakistan’s economic crisis.
The user who shared the viral video with the misleading claim is followed by around 2,000 people on Facebook.
