Following a heated exchange between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office, mixed reactions from the world leaders and the public have surfaced. While some supported Zelensky, others backed Trump’s stance. Amidst this, a video of Zelensky breaking his Ramadan fast with Ukrainian soldiers has gone viral.
Social media users are claiming that this video is from this Ramadan, showing President Zelensky having Iftar with Ukrainian Muslim soldiers. The clip is being widely circulated with this claim.
Vishvas News’ investigation revealed that the video is misleading and dates back to April 2023, when Zelensky had Iftar with Ukrainian Muslim soldiers and religious leaders in Ramadan. The old video is now being circulated with misleading references, linking it to recent events.

While sharing this post a X user wrote, “President Zelensky shares breakfast with Muslim soldiers in Ramadan.”

Investigation
We began our investigation by conducting a Google Search using the keyword ‘Zelensky Iftar’. This led us to an official report on the Ukrainian President’s website, on April 7, 2023. According to the report, “President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy together with Ukrainian Muslim soldiers, leaders of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, and representatives of the Muslim clergy, took part in the Iftar, a dinner held during the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims. The event took place on the territory of the Crimean Tatar cultural center Birlik in Kyiv region.”
Additionally, we noticed the logo of ‘Al-Ain News’ in the viral video. Based on this, we furthered our investigation by searching for the viral video on Al-Ain News’ X-handle and found that it had been posted on April 8, 2023. According to the information provided with the video here, Zelensky held an Iftar among his soldiers during Ramadan at the Crimean Tatar Cultural Center.
We found the news published on the Kyiv Independent.com website on April 8, 2023. According to the information provided in the news, “President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on April 7 that Ukraine was beginning a new tradition of hosting official iftar meals during Ramadan, Ukrinform reported. Zelensky announced it as he participated in the first “official” iftar on April 7, with Muslim servicemen, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people outside a mosque in the center of Kyiv, during which he thanked the Muslim community for defending Ukraine”.
To verify the viral video, we contacted Ukrainian journalist Matthew Kupfer and shared the footage with him. He confirmed that the video is from 2023.
Finally, we conducted a social scan of the X user ‘ Vijesti’ that shared the misleading post and found that the user has over 10600 followers.
