Fact Check: Old Video of Leopard Attack In Mysuru Goes Viral as Recent Sighting in Bengaluru

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video circulating widely on social media shows a leopard running through a residential area and striking a motorbike while crossing the road. The viral post claims it is a recent incident from Bannerghatta, Bengaluru.
Vishvas News’ investigation revealed that the video dates back to 2022 and was originally recorded in Mysuru.
What is in the viral post?
Instagram user ‘bangalorediaries70’ shared this video (archive link) with the caption, “Leopard found in Bangalore near Bannerghatta.”
Investigation
We began our investigation with a Google Reverse Image search. Using Google Lens to analyse keyframes of the video, we found that the full video was uploaded on various YouTube channels in 2022.
We found this original video on the Youtube channel of The New Indian Express, uploaded on November 4, 2022. The description read: “A shocking video of a #leopard attacking people in #Mysuru has gone viral on social media. The incident took place in Kanaka Nagar in Mysuru. In the video leopard is seen frantically running across a street and springing upon a bike-borne man. The bewildered biker fall off his vehicle. The wild animal is then seen running away, and locals chasing it”
We also found the same video on the YouTube channel of The Economic Times, uploaded on November 4, 2022, with the description “Leopard enters residential area in Mysuru, attacks some people; later captured by the forest dept”
The same video was uploaded on various YouTube channels of other news websites in November 2022, with descriptions confirming that the incident occurred in Mysuru. The report also stated that the leopard was later captured by forest department officials.
Using relevant keywords, Vishvas News found a news report by The Times of India, published on November 5, 2022. According to the report, the incident was recorded by an Auto driver in KR Nagar, Mysuru, on November 4, 2022. The leopard was later tranquilised and rescued.
For further verification, Vishvas News contacted KS Nirupama, Digital Media Head at Asianet News Kannada, who confirmed that the viral video was recorded in Mysuru, Karnataka, in 2022, and the leopard was subsequently rescued.
Additionally, we scanned the profile of the user who posted the fake claim and discovered that the user bangalorediaries70 has over 1700 followers.
Conclusion: Vishvas News, in its investigation, found that the claim of recent leopard sighting in Bengaluru is misleading. The viral video dates back to 2022, when a leopard was spotted in Mysuru, Karnataka.
