Fact Check: Old 2024 Video Of Stubble Burning Misleadingly Shared As Recent

New Delhi (Vishvas News). As pollution spikes in Delhi after Diwali, a video of stubble burning in Punjab went viral. It’s being shared as recent evidence of large-scale farm fires worsening Delhi’s air quality, and that the Punjab government is failing to control them.
Vishvas News investigated and found the viral claim to be misleading. The video is not recent and dates back to 2024, and is now falsely used to stir up debate about the current pollution crisis.
What’s going viral?
Facebook user ‘Dhiraj Kumar‘ shared the viral video on October 22, 2025, with the caption, “A large amount of stubble is being burned in Punjab. This is directly affecting Delhi, and Delhi’s air quality is continuously deteriorating. Punjab is under the Aam Aadmi Party government, but the Punjab government appears to be failing to control the stubble burning.”

Investigation
To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we examined the video closely and found the ANI news agency’s logo at the top. We began searching for the video on ANI’s official X account and found that it was posted on November 1, 2024. According to available information, the video shows stubble burning in Dagru village, Moga district, Punjab.
We also found the same video uploaded on the ‘NEWS9 Live’ YouTube channel on November 1, 2024. Here, too, the video was described as being from Moga district.
A report published on Dainik Jagran on October 24, 2025, stated that stubble burning incidents have increased recently, the total number this season is significantly lower than last year. The report states: “This figure is about 70 percent lower than last year. Last year, stubble burning occurred at 1581 locations in the state until October 22, 2025.”
For further clarification, we contacted Manpreet Maliana, Dainik Jagran’s correspondent from Moga district, who confirmed that the viral video is old.
Lastly, we scanned the Facebook account of the user who shared the video with the misleading claim and found that the user has 62000 followers.
