Fact Check: Viral Image Claiming Mother-Son Drowning Misattributed To Jabalpur Bargi Cruise Ship Accident Is AI-Greated

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A tourist cruise at the Bargi Dam in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, capsized in the Narmada River due to a strong storm, claiming the lives of several people. Following the incident, a photo of a mother and son is going viral, showing a woman lying unconscious in the river, with a child lying on top of her. This photo is being shared, linking it to the Bargi Dam incident.

Vishvas News investigated and found the viral claim to be false. The viral image was AI-generated, and users are now circulating it with misleading claims.

What is going viral?

X-user (Archive link) ‘CHAMBAL KESHARI’ shared the viral picture on May 1, 2026, with the caption, “A life jacket is so powerful that even someone who doesn’t know how to swim can stay afloat in the water, but in this picture, it is clearly visible that a mother lost her life even after wearing a life jacket. There is no need to write that the mother must have died while saving her child because a mother’s life is her children, and a mother becomes immortal while saving her own life. There is no one greater than a mother in this world; one should serve and respect parents till death. There is nothing greater than a mother in this world.”

Investigation

To verify the viral claim, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords, but couldn’t find any credible news reports supporting it. Upon closer inspection of the photo, we noticed several flaws. We noticed that the woman’s and the child’s hands appeared to be touching, and the woman’s eyebrows were also split. Such flaws often occur in AI-generated images, raising the suspicion that the photo was AI-generated.

To further investigate, we searched the image using the AI ​​detection tool ‘Hive Moderation’, which indicated a 90% probability of the image being AI-generated.

During our investigation, we found a post related to the claim on the Jabalpur Collector’s official Facebook account. On May 1, 2024, he shared the viral image, captioning it, “Jabalpur — This photo is AI-generated or from another source. It has no connection to the Bargi cruise ship accident.”

To verify further, we contacted Naidunia Jabalpur’s reporter Dhiraj Vajpayee, who told us that the viral claim is false and the image is AI-generated.

During our investigation, we found a report on the Hindustan Times website that contained the claim, published on May 1, 2026. The report contains a photograph of the actual accident. According to the report, “A heartbreaking scene emerged during a rescue operation in Madhya Pradesh. The body of a woman holding her child was recovered from inside a capsized tourist boat at Bargi Dam.”

What is the context?

According to a report published on NDTV’s website on April 2, 2026, “A tragic accident occurred on April 30th at Jabalpur’s Bargi Dam. An overloaded cruise ship capsized near Khamaria Island amid strong winds, rising waves, and torrential rain. Nine people have died in the accident so far, and 28 have been rescued.”

Finally, we scanned the account of the X user who shared the photo with the false claim and found that the user has over 25,000 followers.

Conclusion: Vishvas News investigated and found that the viral claim attributing the mother-son photo to the Bargi Dam accident is false. The viral image was AI-generated.
