Fact Check: Claim That Mamata Banerjee’s House Was Set On Fire After Bengal Elections Is False
The claim that Mamata Banerjee's house was burned after the West Bengal elections is false. However, BJP workers have been accused of burning down a TMC office in Asansol. The video circulating as a link to the violence is from Bangladesh. It has no connection to Bengal.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a majority in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Meanwhile, reports of violence have emerged in the state. A video related to these incidents is going viral on social media, showing a house on fire. Some users are sharing it with claims that BJP workers set Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s house and TMC office on fire. The user posted the video, urging people to shut down Kolkata.
Vishvas News investigated and found the claim to be false. However, two TMC offices in Asansol have been set on fire, with BJP workers being blamed. Meanwhile, the video circulating as post-election violence is from Bangladesh and has no connection to West Bengal.
What is the viral post?
Facebook user ‘Akhtar Bhohariya’ posted a video (archive link) on May 4, 2026, with the caption, “With alleged support from the CRPF, some people associated with BJP workers set fire to Mamata Banerjee’s house and a TMC office. There are also reports of an attack on Mamata. TMC workers shut down Kolkata today. This is a matter of honour.”
Investigation
To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we first extracted key frames from the video and searched them using Google Lens. This led us to a report published on India TV’s website on January 16, 2026, which uploaded some key frames from the video. According to the report, “Hindus have been attacked once again in Bangladesh. Islamic fundamentalists set fire to the house of Birendra Kumar Dey in Bahor village of Nandirgaon Union, Gowaighat, Sylhet district.”
Bangladeshi journalist and editor of ‘Blitz’, ‘Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury’ also posted the viral video from his account on January 16, 2026, writing, “Islamic fundamentalists set fire to the house of Birendra Kumar Dey alias ‘Jhunu Sir’ (a teacher by profession) in Bahor village of Nandirgaon Union of Gowainghat Upazila in Sylhet district of Bangladesh.”
A news report about this incident was published on the ANI website on January 16, 2026. According to it, “A fire broke out at the home of Bikash Ranjan Deb in Gowaighat, Sylhet district, eastern Bangladesh. Police Sub-Inspector Didar said the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. Bikash told police he believed the incident was purely an accident caused by the short circuit.”
This made it clear that the viral video is from Bangladesh and is old.
After this, we searched for Mamta’s house being set on fire using relevant keywords, but no credible report was found.
What is the context?
According to a report uploaded on Aaj Tak’s website on May 4, 2026, tensions have escalated in Bengal following the election results. Two TMC party offices in the Barabani area of Asansol were vandalized and later set on fire. TMC leaders have accused the BJP of being behind these attacks.
The results of the assembly elections held in West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry have been declared. According to the information on the Election Commission (EC) of India’s website, the BJP has won a majority in West Bengal by winning 206 seats and in Assam by winning 82 seats. In Puducherry, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has won 18 seats. In Kerala, the Congress-led UDF has won a majority by winning more than 100 seats. In Tamil Nadu, South Indian actor Joseph C Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the largest party after winning 108 seats.
We contacted Rajeev Kumar Jha, a senior correspondent for Dainik Jagran in Kolkata, who said there were no reports of an attack on Mamata’s home.
Lastly, we scanned the profile of the Facebook user who shared the video with the false claim and found that the user identifies as a resident of Ahmedabad and has 1000 followers. This account was created on March 2, 2012 and is influenced by a specific ideology.
Conclusion: The claim that Mamata Banerjee’s house was burned after the West Bengal elections is false. However, BJP workers have been accused of burning down a TMC office in Asansol. The video circulating as a link to the violence is from Bangladesh. It has no connection to Bengal.
