Fact Check: Balendra Shah did not order the demolition of mosques and Idgahs in Nepal

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A social media post claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Nepal’s new Prime Minister Balendra Shah to India is going viral. It features a photo of Shah and reads, “He has said that he will join hands with the Indian government only when India is declared Ramrajya.” It is also being claimed that Shah has issued orders to demolish all Eidgahs, mosques, and dargahs in Nepal.
Vishvas News investigated and found the viral claim to be false. Shah has not issued any such statement or order.
What is the viral post?
Instagram user ‘hindusanatani_sher’ shared the viral post (archived link) on April 12, 2026, with the caption, “Balen Shah’s sensational statement. Balen Shah said, I will join hands with the Indian government only on the condition that it declares the entire country as Ramrajya. As soon as I took the oath as Prime Minister, I issued an order to demolish all Idgahs, mosques and dargahs in Nepal. Soon, Nepal will be completely free from the jihadi mentality. Nepal was, is and will always be a Hindu nation.”
Investigation
To verify the viral claim, we searched the website using relevant keywords but found no media reports to support the claim that Shah made any such statement.
In Google search, we did not find any report confirming the claim that an order has been issued to demolish all Eidgahs, mosques and dargahs in Nepal.
We also found no such posts on Balendra Shah’s X account. He hasn’t posted anything since March 26, 2026.
The Nepal Prime Minister’s Office’s X handle posted on March 28, 2026, thanking Indian PM Modi for his well-wishes. It also read, “I am eager to work closely with you to advance the multifaceted relations between our two countries for the common prosperity of our people.”
Apart from this, no such post has been made from this account which can confirm the viral claim.
What is the context?
According to a report published on The Kathmandu Post website on April 11, 2026, “Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said that Indian PM Modi has invited Prime Minister Balendra Shah to visit India. Modi had extended this invitation in his congratulatory message to Balendra Shah upon his assumption of office on March 27, 2026. The PM has accepted the invitation, but the visit will only take place after both sides have completed their homework at the technical and political levels to yield concrete results.”
On March 27, 2026, a post was posted from Narendra Modi’s ex-handle congratulating Balendra Shah on becoming the PM of Nepal.
We found no reports mentioning that Nepal has been declared a”Hindu nation again. A review of the official Nepal government website shows that Part 1 of the country’s constitution states, “Nepal is an independent, indivisible, sovereign, secular, inclusive, democratic, socialism-oriented, federal democratic republican state.”
We contacted JP Ranjan, Dainik Jagran’s special correspondent covering foreign affairs, who dismissed the viral claim as fake and said there was no such information.
We have contacted Nepal-based freelance journalist Anuj Arora for comment. This story will be updated as soon as we receive a response.
We scanned the Instagram profile of the user who shared the fake post and found that the account was created in 2019 and has over 87,000 followers.
Conclusion: Nepal’s PM Balendra Shah has not imposed any conditions on India for declaring Ram Rajya, nor has he ordered the demolition of all mosques. The viral post is misleading.
