Fact Check: Rahul Gandhi’s Alleged Statement On Congress And TMC In West Bengal Is False

Rahul Gandhi, in a public rally in Malda, West Bengal, stated that the BJP could be defeated by the Congress, and not the TMC. A fragment of that video is being shared with a false claim.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). The first phase of voting for the West Bengal Assembly elections was held on April 23rd 2026, while the second phase will take place on April 29th, 2026. Meanwhile, a video of Congress MP and opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, is going viral on social media. In the video, Rahul can be heard saying that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) cannot compete with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Some users are sharing the video and claiming that Rahul has admitted that the BJP is unmatched in Bengal.

Vishvas News investigated and found that the viral clip is edited. In fact, Rahul publicly stated at a rally in Malda that the TMC cannot compete with the BJP and only Congress can defeat it. An edited video from that rally is being used to make a false claim.

In this video, Rahul is heard saying, “Don’t forget that TMC cannot compete with BJP.”

Facebook user ‘Firu Toppo Oraon’ shared this video (archive link) on April 21, 2026, with similar claims.

Investigation

To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords. A longer version of this clip was posted on the Facebook page ‘All India Mahila Congress‘ on April 14, 2026, where Rahul can be heard saying, “Don’t forget that the TMC cannot compete with the BJP. If any party can stand against the BJP and defeat it, then that party is Congress. All that is happening against you, the SIR, the vote theft, and Trinamool cannot stop it. The atrocities that the BJP is committing against you, in Bengal, in the country, cutting votes, spreading violence, Trinamool cannot stop it. The Congress Party can stop it, and the BJP knows this. The BJP knows that the Trinamool Congress cannot defeat them, and that only Congress can topple them.”

This meeting was held in Malda, West Bengal.

A longer version of the viral clip was also posted on Congress’s official X handle on April 14, 2026, which reads, “The TMC cannot compete with the BJP. Only the Congress party can stand up to the BJP and defeat it. The BJP is oppressing people in West Bengal and across the country. Vote theft is being committed here in the name of SIR, but the TMC cannot stop it. Only the Congress can stop it.”: Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Malda, West Bengal

According to a report published on News18 Bengali on April 14, 2026, “Rahul Gandhi, while addressing a public rally at Kalambagh grounds during the election campaign, targeted the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress party and the central government. He said that only the Congress party can truly fight to stop the BJP. The rally was organized in support of candidates contesting the 12 assembly seats in Malda district.”

To verify further, we contacted Amba Prasad, co-in-charge of the Congress party in West Bengal and present at the Malda rally. She stated, “Rahul Gandhi had said that the TMC cannot defeat the BJP. He also said that only Congress can defeat the BJP. By removing that part of the video, propaganda is being spread against the Congress.”

What is the context?

According to information shared by the Election Commission (EC) on its official X Account on 23 April 2026, “84.69% voting took place in Tamil Nadu and 91.78% in West Bengal in the first phase.”

Counting of votes for Kerala, Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry will take place on May 4 2026.”

Lastly, we scanned the Facebook profile of the user who shared the video with the false claim and found that the user identifies as a resident of Binnaguri, West Bengal, and has over 5,000 followers. The user shares posts influenced by a particular ideology.
