Fake News: Viral Video of Mamata Banerjee’s Security Row is Old
The viral claim regarding a lathi-charge on a TMC worker and the video of Mamata Banerjee arguing with security personnel are false and old.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). Two videos misattributed to the Bengal Assembly elections are going viral on social media. In the first video, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is seen arguing with security force personnel. This video is being shared as recent, and it is being claimed that Mamata got angry over the deployment of CRPF outside her bungalow. In the second video, two people are seen sitting with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) flag, and the police come there, lathi-charge them, and chase them away. This video is being shared with the claim that it is from the first phase of polling in Bengal. The TMC workers were sitting on the streets and campaigning for Trinamool.
Vishvas News investigated and found both claims to be false. The first video dates back to February 2026, when Mamata visited Delhi, unhappy with the SIR process. The second video, however, is not recent, but dates back to 2023, during the Panchayat elections. The viral claim is misleading and has no connection to the assembly elections.
What is going viral?
X user ‘Ca GDUpadhyay’ shared the viral video on April 25, 2026, writing, “Seeing CRPF personnel outside her house, Mamata Didi panicked and in a moment, she realised she was living in a shadow of fear. Salute to the patience of the people of West Bengal who endured nearly 15 years of oppression and discrimination against Hindus.”

Facebook user ‘Mukut Ajnoti’ shared the viral video on April 23, 2026, writing in the caption, “Some peaceful Trinamool Congress workers are sitting on the roads near polling stations and campaigning for Trinamool, then see what happened.”

Investigation
First video
To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we extracted several keyframes from the video and searched them using Google reverse image search. This led us to a longer version of the viral video on News18 India’s official Instagram account, uploaded on February 2, 2026. The caption reads, “West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who arrived in Delhi, suddenly became angry with Delhi Police personnel outside the Banga Bhavan. She raised questions about the barricading, which heated up the atmosphere.”
Based on the information we received, we searched Google using relevant keywords. We found a report on NDTV’s official website related to the claim, published on February 2, 2026. According to the report, “Why are you running away after seeing me?” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at Delhi’s Banga Bhavan, asking this question to Delhi Police personnel. She had arrived in Delhi the previous night with families facing discrepancies and alleged harassment in the SIR case. Upon arrival, she launched a scathing attack on the Delhi Police. Mamata claimed that the Delhi Police was ‘waking up and harassing’ families from Bengal who had suffered hardships due to the SIR and had taken refuge in Delhi, and that ‘strict surveillance’ had been imposed around Banga Bhavan.”
Second video
To verify the viral claim, we extracted several key frames from the video and performed a Google reverse image search. We found a longer version of the viral video on a Facebook account called ‘canning news’, shared on July 9, 2023. According to the caption, the video is from the Basanti Block of Canning City.
Based on this, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords. We found a related report on the official YouTube channel of News18 Bangla, shared on July 8, 2023. According to available information, “The video is from the West Bengal Panchayat elections. A tense situation prevailed in the Basanti block of Canning city. To control the situation, police resorted to a lathi-charge on some people.”
Upon closer inspection of the video, we noticed that the poster included Neelima Mistry’s name. We then searched for Neelima Mistry and found that she was a TMC candidate from the Basanti Zilla Parishad-1 constituency in South 24 Parganas district during the 2023 Panchayat elections.
For more information, we contacted Dainik Jagran’s Kolkata bureau chief, JK Bajpai, who confirmed that the claims regarding both videos are false. Both videos are old, and the second video is about three years old and has no connection to the assembly elections.
What is the context?
The first phase of polling took place in West Bengal on April 23, 2026, with a 91.78% voter turnout. The second phase of polling will be held on April 29, 2026, and the counting of votes will take place on May 4, 2026. Assembly elections are being held in four states and one union territory, including West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry. Voting for the assembly elections in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry took place on April 9, 2026. According to the Election Commission (EC) data, 85.38% voter turnout was recorded in Assam, 78.03% in Kerala, and 89.83% in Puducherry.
Lastly, we scanned the account of the user who shared the video with the false claim and found that the user has 10,000 followers.
Conclusion: Vishvas News investigated and found that the viral claim regarding a lathi-charge on a TMC worker and the video of Mamata Banerjee arguing with security personnel are false and old.
