Fact Check: Viral Video Of Smoke-Filled Cabin Is Not Linked To Ahmedabad Plane Crash
The viral video of smoke in the cabin is not related to the Ahmedabad plane crash. This video is of an incident that happened in Romania, when a Ryanair flight was filled with smoke.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A tragic accident involving an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner occurred in Ahmedabad on the afternoon of June 12, 2025. The aircraft, operating as flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed minutes after takeoff, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. In the wake of this harrowing event, a video showing panic inside a smoke-filled aircraft has gone viral, with claims linking it to the Ahmedabad crash.
Vishvas News investigated the viral post and found this claim to be fake. The viral video is not related to the Ahmedabad tragedy. The clip is from an incident that happened in Romania in 2020 involving a Ryanair flight.
What is going viral?
Threads user marieannensalaf shared the viral post on June 13, 2025, with the caption, “The 242 Air India passengers bound for London minutes before the crash.”

Investigation
To begin the investigation, we first did a Google reverse image search of the keyframes of the video. We found the video on an X account named BPT uploaded on April 3, 2023.
The same video from another angle was featured in a news report by Polish news outlet WP on March 17, 2023.
We also found the same video uploaded on the Facebook page of Daily Mail on March 17, 2023 with the claim that it happened in Romania.
On searching with keywords, we did not find any news of any such incident in Romania in March 2023. However, we found multiple reports from January 2020 that detailed the incident on a Ryanair flight in Romania and embedded clips similar to the viral video. NDTV reported on January 23, 2020, “A flight from Romania’s capital Bucharest to London suddenly filled with smoke, causing panic among the people, following which the plane had to make an emergency landing. According to a report in the Daily Mail, the flight was flying from Romania’s capital Bucharest to London and had 169 passengers on board. However, the plane filled with smoke shortly after takeoff and had to make an emergency landing.”
We found many more reports about this incident that happened in January 2020 in Romania.
When we searched for Ryanair plane seats using keywords, we found that the seats of this airline have a yellow upper part, as can be seen in the viral video.
To further verify the claim, we reached out to Shatrughan Sharma, senior correspondent with Dainik Jagran in Gujarat, who is covering the Ahmedabad plane crash. He confirmed that the video is not of the Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad. “The plane seen in the video is a small plane, while the plane that crashed was a large Dreamliner” He added.
Ahmedabad Plane Crash
Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on June 12, 2025, crashed minutes after takeoff. The plane crashed into a residential area of Meghnanigar in Ahmedabad, on the B.J. Medical College campus and doctors’ hostel. Out of the 242 people on board the plane, 241 died, including 230 passengers, 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew. Only one passenger, British citizen of Indian origin Vishwash Kumar Ramesh (seat 11A), survived. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also among those killed.

In the end, we scanned the account of the user who shared the video with false information. We found that the Threads user marieannensalaf has 70 followers.
Conclusion: The viral video of smoke in the cabin is not related to the Ahmedabad plane crash. This video is of an incident that happened in Romania, when a Ryanair flight was filled with smoke.
